Whitacre is that rare thing, a modern composer who is both popular and original.
- The Daily Telegraph, London
In our second concert of the year, the Queensland Wind Orchestra performs music by one of the greatest living wind band composers: Eric Whitacre, and from those composers who influence him. Whitacre is one of the most widely-performed and popular composers of our time. His first album as a composer and conductor on Decca/Universal, Light & Gold, won a Grammy in 2012 and became the number one classical album in the US and UK in its first week. His second album, Water Night was released on Decca in April 2012, and debuted at number one on the iTunes and Billboard classical charts on the day of release.
He studied at the Julliard School (New York), earning his Master of Music degree under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning composer, John Corigliano.
