Why a new band in 2004?
Whilst the Brisbane community band scene has been flourishing in recent
years, there was something missing. Having developed to a fine standard
of instrumental playing at school, university or in other ensembles,
where to next? There seemed to be a great waste of excellent musicians
who simply stopped playing since there was no wind ensemble of a
suitable standard to continue their development.
Enter the Queensland Wind Orchestra The Queensland Wind
Orchestra aims to rectify this situation and to produce outstanding
performances to the Brisbane community by requiring a high standard of
musicianship for entry to the group. All players must audition for a
place in the group each year.
Our members include university music students and music teachers as
well as people who have gone on to careers in other fields including
medicine, science, nursing, engineering and many more. These people are
brought together by a desire to develop their individual and ensemble
playing skills, to enjoy the company of other like minded musicians,
and simply to play great music with a fantastic ensemble.
The orchestra performs regularly around Brisbane and participation in
regional tours, competitions and workshops and the commissioning and
premiere of new works are all planned for the future.
Our Mission Statement QWO provides a supportive and
challenging musical environment enabling advanced players to develop
their instrumental skills and ensemble musicianship to an elite
standard, and is sincerely committed to promoting accessible wind music
to the wider community and furthering the excellence of Queensland’s
musical culture. |
