WASBE 2007 podcasts

9 July, 2007 (21:06) | News | No comments

For all those who couldn’t make it to the WASBE conference in Killarney this year, you can still join in by listening to the podcasts. Point your mouse to http://www.wasbe.org/conferences/2007/podcast/index.shtml and tune in to the three episodes posted so far.

Episode 1: Fergus O’Carroll Interview, Part 1

If we’re going to talk about the 2007 WASBE Conference, why not go direct to the source? We spoke with Fergus O’Carroll, Local Organising Committee Chair for the 13th WASBE Conference, in Killarney, Ireland. The first part of this interview speaks about how the bid was put together, the “threads” or “strands” that wove themselves into the fabric of the Conference, and a bit more about the concerts and the pre-concert talks that precede them. For those of you new to WASBE, we have a short primer as well.

Episode 2: Fergus O’Carroll Interview, Part 2

We bring you the conclusion of our interview with Fergus O’Carroll, Local Organising Committee Chair for the 13th WASBE Conference, in Killarney, Ireland. Fergus talks about the role of the Artistic Planning Committee in this Conference, the morning repertoire sessions, highlights of the 15 research sessions, the social activities planned and more. We also describe how we will cover the Conference on the WASBE Web Site.

Episode 3: IYWO and Dr. Glenn Price

The International Youth Wind Orchestra is a fixture of the biennial conference, featuring some of the best young players in the world. Dr. Glenn Price is currently in charge of the artistic direction of the ensemble and he shares his thoughts on the repertoire he and Gerhard Markson will be conducting, the evolution of the group over the past number of years and the strength of this year’s group.

On wind ensemble tone

30 June, 2007 (09:05) | Editorials | No comments

In 1952 Frederick Fennell established the Eastman Wind Ensemble with the following instrumentation:

Reeds
2 flutes and piccolo and/or alto flute
2 oboes and English horn
1 E-flat clarinet
8 B-flat clarinets, or A clarinets divided in any manner desired or fewer in number if so desired
1 E-flat alto clarinet
1 B-flat bass clarinet
Choir of saxophones—2 E-flat altos, 1 B-flat tenor, 1 E-flat baritone

Brass
3 cornets in B-flat
2 trumpets in B-flat or 5 trumpets
4 horns
2 euphoniums
2 tubas (1 E-flat and 1 BB-flat or 2 BB-flat)
1 string bass

Other instruments
Percussion, harp, celeste, piano, organ, harpsichord, solo string instruments and choral forces as desired.

Frederick Fennell wrote: “[the new group] consists of the reed–brass combination of the orchestra Wagner assembled for Bayreuth plus a section of saxophones. All of the perhaps less pleasant reactions one customarily associates with a band I do not think you will find present here. From the standpoint of texture it is not bloated, is clear and at the same time intense, in tune, flexible, virtuosic—contains a magnificent range of dynamics plus a beautiful tone quality.”

Persichetti: Divertimento; Masquerade; ParableUnderstanding this history of the birth of the wind ensemble concept is necessary for anyone attempting to direct a ‘band’. A wind ensemble is an expanded orchestral wind, brass and percussion section plus saxophones: why then do so many bands play with a tone that is so dissimilar from an orchestra? A very interesting comparison can be made with recordings by the leading wind ensembles and those made by the wind and brass sections of the world’s best orchestras. The Winds of the London Symphony Orchestra have a CD with works by Persichetti and the Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic have a CD of famous marches. There is an incredible difference in the tone of these recordings compared to the tone of the world’s leading wind ensembles.

I am continually striving to achieve that ‘orchestral’ sound with my wind ensembles. I think it is up to all musicians to remember the genesis of the wind ensemble and the tonal concept it was founded on and continually aim for a more pure, orchestral tone.

On using correct instrumentation

7 March, 2007 (05:36) | Editorials | No comments

I believe the wind ensemble to be one of the most beautiful and versatile collections of instruments there is. Whenever it is possible I always perform compositions with the correct instrumentation. Why put the cor anglais solo on alto saxophone just because it’s covenient? Is it really too much trouble to call an oboist and perform the piece as the composer intended. Piano parts, harp parts, contrabass clarinet and contrabassoon parts? Obviously, it is hard to find players and instruments for the contra parts, but it isn’t difficult to locate piano and harp players and the difference that a beautiful harp sound can make to the ensemble is amazing.

What annoys me more than people not taking the trouble to arrange for the ‘non-standard’ instruments to be covered (a true wind ensemble is based on flexible instrumentation — everything is standard!) is when standard instruments are changed. My great pet hate here is the trumpet parts. Nearly every band I see plays all the cornet parts on trumpet. Do you really think the composer didn’t know the difference between a cornet and a trumpet. When a piece has 3 cornet parts and 2 trumpet parts and everything is played on trumpet don’t you think it will sound incorrect?

It seems fewer and fewer trumpet players own cornets these days, or an attitutde exists that if you are a brass band player you use a cornet and a wind band player uses a trumpet. Serious musicians don’t limit themselves to one style. Serious musicians should have an arsenal of instruments at their disposal to cater for all styles of music: clarinetists should own both B-flat and A clarinets, good alto saxophonists should have a soprano to double on (if they are interested in playing musicals they’ll also need flute and clarinet!) and trumpet players should, at the very mimimum, own a trumpet and a cornet (I also think they should have a flugel and a C trumpet as well).

The beauty of the wind ensemble concept is its theory of flexible instrumentation: this makes it backwards compatible with all wind music composed since the sixteenth century. Its flexibility also means that composers can add or change any instrument they choose. I think we should make every effort possible to realise the composers’ intentions and perform on the instruments they chose — another step in taking Australian wind ensembles and concert bands from out of the amateurish depths where they seem stuck and a step closer to professionalism.

Coda

Many publishers produce advertising materials to promote their publications. Ask your music dealer to obtain sample scores and recordings of published works.

As noted, this is not an exhaustive list, but a compilation of researched materials, available in Australia.

Your ensemble demands and deserves quality repertoire and it is up to you, the conductor, to spend the time in finding it. It is my hope that this listing of quality band music has been of some assistance to you in that search. Please feel free to contact me at the Queensland Conservatorium at any time.
